Today the Grand Forks Herald published "MINNESOTA POLITICS: West, south are keys to statewide elections Politicians will spend more time in rural areas."
In the article, we find this money quote:
Swing areas
The swing areas appear to be districts now represented by U.S. Reps. Collin Peterson, who serves most of western Minnesota, and Gil Gutknecht, a longtime southern Minnesota congressman.
Let's take a swing through the netroots and news to see what's up in MN-01.
REACTION TO THE DEBATE
Evil Bobby has a list of Gutknecht's votes, courtesy of the Walz campaign at Saturday's debate, and (all on his own) a caption contest for three pictures from the debate. The Gutknecht campaign did not have handouts for the press or audience.
Norwegianity recycles one of Evil Bobby's pictures as a Pixlinx. Click on the picture of Gilbert and learn more about his record.
Blanked Out assesses the debate coverage so far: Gutknecht offers debunked theories as policy, Walz dominates debate. Noah also provides a link in his comments for those who need schooling on Krazy Kat.
The Blog of the Moderate Left picks up on Evil Bobby's story: Gutknecht: It’s Them En-vi-ro-mentlists, I Tells Ya!, adding:
Yes, radical environmentalists are the ones who got us involved in a destabilizing war in Iraq and convinced Ehud Olmert that now would be a great time to invade Lebanon. Damn radical environmentalists for pushing us to increase our dependence on foreign oil while simultaneously ensuring CAFE standards stayed flat!
BSP will have more as soon as we get the audio from Walz's media staff. We don't want to risk a misquote of either candidate's remarks on trade with Cuba, Country-of-origin labels (COOL) for food, milk protein imports, DM & E, and (hold your breath--it's coming--yes!) manure management.
GIL GUTKNECHT'S WEEK THAT WAS
North Star Politics provides a deft one-paragraph summation in its tidbits section:
Gil Gutknecht is embroiled in a mini-scandal. Perhaps he doesn't understand how we truck drivers in the tubes like our internets. Of course, he might not even be on the ballot in November. Even if he is, his race is now the 39th closest in the country. Times are tough.
SMART PEOPLE IN THE FIRST
We swiped the picture in this post from Evil Bobby's post: Signs of Intelligent Life on Highway 14 . He writes:
Nothing like a Tim Walz sign right on a healthy field of Soy Beans to send a message.
Now, doesn't that make you want to send a check?
BUT DIDN'T CONGRESS BAN INTERNET GAMBLING?
Poolitics asks people to put your money where your mouth is. The pool question up now for MN-01 is:
Will the Minnesota Supreme Court disqualify Rep. Gil Gutknecht (R) from the September 12 primary ballot as a result of the DFL lawsuit claiming that he collected signatures (in lieu of a filing fee) ahead of the filing period?
The minimum bet is $5. Now, why would you squander that money when you can send it here? Be a good citizen and contribute.
COLLEGE STUDENTS UNDERSTAND WIKIPEDIA
Aaron at U-DFL writes in Adventures with Gil Gutknecht:
The good people at Wikipedia recently caught Republican Rep. Gil Gutknecht editing his entry in the most hilarious of ways.
When he was swept into office in the 1994 takeover, Gutknecht made a promise to get out within 12 years. Well, here we are in 2006 and he's running for election again, against his word. So what does he do? You guessed it, he edits his Wikipedia entry (which mentions that pledge) in an attempt to strike it from the record. Amusingly, Wikipedia was tipped off and put the kabash on that plan.
THANKS
Several blogs around the country recently have written kind words about BSP. We appreciate the praise and if we have not done so already, we will be emailing our thanks to the writers.
However, this blog is focused on the congressional race in Minnesota, not ourselves. Thus, we will link to those posts which discuss the dynamics of the race itself. Those who praise the blog will get our heartful thanks privately and a place in our blogroll if they continue to cover the race in MN-01. It's not about this blog.
After all, we are Minnesotans and our parents raised us right.
