On "All things Considered," Michelle Norris reports from the Fighting First that Minnesota House Seat May Depend on War Issues:
All Things Considered, November 3, 2006 · In Minnesota's 1st Congressional District, the race pits a once-safe Republican incumbent, Rep. Gil Gutknecht, against a National Guard veteran and high school teacher, Tim Walz.
Walz has made Iraq a centerpiece of his campaign, and as a 24-year member of the Minnesota National Guard, he delivers a authoritative critique of the war -- and its Republican supporters.
The race falls in a district of independent-minded voters that has trended Republican in recent elections. But support for the war has been falling. And during a recent visit to the area, the war in Iraq seemed to be the main issue on voters' minds. Some residents who voted for Gutknecht in previous elections now say they aren't sure they'll cast their ballot for him next week.
Sound should be up soon. Norris has talked to local barbers in Owatonna, rather than just the usual herd of political scientists.
