The Worthington Globe reports on the The millionth acre enrolled in the CREP program. The acreage is near near Pipestone. Walz is quoted. In Langes' CREP acres cause for celebration, the landowners speak:
Steve [Lange] explained to those in attendance that “although my wife and I don’t actually farm, we are in the restaurant business, and as they say, just a little farther down the food chain. We are both natives of the area, and have close ties to the farm. I enjoyed years of helping my six uncles to whom farming was more than occupation, it was a chosen way of life. To each of them, the land was always treated with the utmost respect, crop rotation and conservation practices were principals held dear by each of them.”
He went on to explain, “CREP may not be the most financially rewarding choice that can be made with rental rates and land values escalating rapidly, however with 10 grandchildren we felt that they deserved the same opportunities we had. We are thankful for conservation programs such as CREP which will help protect the land so that they too may be startled by the rush of the wings of a partridge, the cackling of a rooster pheasant, the V formation of geese looking for feed, the quacks of ducks flying by in search of open water, the sight of deer grazing free, or simply just the enjoyment of a clean, safe glass of water.”
According to Steve the most surprising part of the event “was being chosen, I really had no idea. It was so unexpected.”
