In his closing keynote speech to Netroots Minnesota late yesterday afternoon, Minnesota Secretary of State Mark Ritchie spoke of how the best activism is based in an expression of values. Those involved in social media at some point begin to base their work in what they love, and act with others to strenghen and protect the people, the place, the nature, the country and the values they love.
Netroots Minnesota and the Minnesota Farmers Union annual convention both embodied this ide, and I was happy to take an active role in boh events. While the former event was more youthful, the MFU members matched the wired activists in energy, passion and a fierce protective love of neighbor, community and country.
We've elected a new vice president of Minnesota Farmers Union, Renville County's Gary Wertish, on a first ballot using IRV, perhaps the first time a major grassroots organization has chosen its leadership using this means.
Congratulations to Gary, and thanks to the others who cared enough to put their names forward to run.
