Bluestem will say farewell to the Emo Senator in the morning; tonight's the time to gather and sort the news of Allen Quist's win, which is a surprise only for those who weren't paying attention.
Update 8/15/2012: The Afternoon Glean at Minnpost has compiled an excellent review of reporting by Jon Collins, Mike Mullen, Josh Moniz and other in Primary coverage and reactions. [end update]
Tim Engstrom writes in the Albert Lea Tribune article, Quist over Parry in Minnesota’s 1st District:
Former state Rep. Allen Quist made a political comeback Tuesday, beating state Sen. Mike Parry in the Republican primary to challenge U.S. Rep. Tim Walz in southern Minnesota.
With most precincts reporting, Quist had 54 percent of the vote to 46 percent for Parry. The win capped a raucous primary contest that saw the two Republicans tearing into each other after trading over-the-top comments. The 1st District, with many rural areas but also cities including Rochester, Mankato and Winona, has been a political swing area; but Democrat Walz has built a formidable base of support.
The Worthington Globe posted the AP story, Spokesman: Parry concedes to Quist in 1st:
A campaign spokesman for state Sen. Mike Parry says Parry has conceded to Allen Quist in their 1st District House primary.
Ben Golnik says Parry conceded late Tuesday night. Quist, a former state representative, led by nine points with 83 percent of the unofficial vote counted. . . .
Kevin Coss at the Austin Herald reports in Parry concedes defeat to Quist:
Mike Parry, one of two GOP candidates for U.S. House of Representatives in Minnesota’s 1st District, has officially conceded the primary election to his contender Allen Quist, according to a campaign spokesperson.
“One reason for our success is that the public knows our debt crisis is a huge threat to our nation,” Quist said in a statement. “They know that changing course will require someone with a steady focus, someone with a grasp of the financial issues before us, and someone with the courage and leadership to make a difference in this daunting task.”
Quist will face incumbent Rep. Tim Walz in the November general election. . . .
Quist's statement is available online at his website.
The New Ulm Journal went to bed before Parry conceded. At the Mankato Free Press, veteran political reporter Mark Fischenich write a squib on Parry concedes election--check out the brief article for Pat Christman's terrific photographs of the Quist and Parry election night stories.
Like the Worthington Globe, most of the papers are posting the AP story. We'll look at more complete coverage tomorrow.
