The Strib reports this morning in DM&E train derails near Courtland:
COURTLAND, Minn. — A section of State Highway 68 in southern Minnesota was closed after a train derailed Wednesday night, officials said.
Between six and 10 Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern Railroad cars went off the rails south of Courtland, the Blue Earth County Sheriff's Department said. The department declined to immediately provide further details.
The section of highway that was closed — in both directions — stretched from State Highway 15 near New Ulm to Blue Earth County Road 47, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Transportation said.
The road was likely to be closed until noon today, the spokeswoman said. Motorists were advised that Highway 14 was an alternate route.
From the looks of the map and the involvement of the Blue Earth County Sheriff's Department, the derailment probably took place west of the tiny town of Cambria.
The DM & E Railroad's request for a $2.3 billion federal loan for upgrade and expansion has triggered robust opposition in the Rochester area. Project supporters contend that the project would minimize derailments and other safety problems caused by aging tracks.
