Terrific news for Guard members deployed to Kosovo and their families, the Strib reports:
U.S. troops on peacekeeping missions in Kosovo -- including hundreds of Minnesota National Guard members -- won't have their pay cut, the Pentagon said Thursday, ending weeks of speculation that officials were considering such a move.
The loss of imminent-danger pay and other benefits would have cost soldiers hundreds of dollars each month.
Representative Walz responds:
Word that the military might cut pay and benefits had prompted complaints from troops and some members of Congress, including members of Minnesota's delegation.
"I am pleased with the Pentagon's decision to ensure our soldiers receive the combat pay they deserve for serving in Kosovo," said Rep. Tim Walz, D-Minn., who had organized opposition in the House to the proposed change.
"I was able to have a conversation with Secretary [Robert] Gates earlier today," Walz said Thursday night, "and I felt encouraged that he was taking a proactive approach to the letter my colleagues and I sent regarding this matter."
