The Westbrook Sentinel looks at the 2007 Farm Bill, interviewing local representatives of the Farm Bureau, the Farmers Union, the Minnesota Soybean Growers, and Ducks Unlimited. The article points out that only ten percent of the funding in the Farm Bill goes toward subsidy payments for farmers; the rest goes toward rural development, WIC funding, renewable energy and conservation, and other programs.
A small town in Cottonwood County, Westbrook received an ambulance via a Rural Development loan several years ago.
The Minnesota Farmers Union member interviewed for the story, Merlyn Hubin (see p. 2), will be taking part in the NFU fly-in to Washington DC on March 26-28.
The article notes:
Minnesota is fortunate to have Congressmen Peterson and Walz on the committee to speak out for Minnesota farmers.
