The Star Tribune praises the vote on stem cell research:
The political debate has split Americans, and not always by political party. Former First Lady Nancy Reagan, for example, has been a leader in seeking more embryonic research, along with other prominent Republicans. On Thursday, Minnesota's House delegation was split in half -- not along party lines -- with Reps. Keith Ellison, Betty McCollum, Jim Ramstad and Tim Walz voting in favor of easing limits on embryonic research and Reps. Michele Bachmann, John Kline, Jim Oberstar and Collin Peterson voting against it.
It will be a great day when scientific developments render the political argument moot. In the meantime, however, progress toward needed therapies is slowed as unused embryos are destroyed straightaway rather than diverted first to this vital area of research.
A young blogger attending MSU writes about Tim Walz's vote for expansion of the hate crimes statute. A touching story about an encounter with Judy Shepard and the officer who found her son Matt in Hate crimes bill violates rights? Really? Here is what I have to say:
The Austin Herald publishes Walz: Don't take focus off Afghanistan which had appeared earlier in its sister paper in Albert Lea.
We'll be busy with the Audubon Society training most of the day. This should prove interesting; the citizens gathered from around the country include a young law school professor, an enivronmental educator from Indiana who is also a farmer, ranchers from Montana, a social justice activist from Iowa, a retired poli sci professor from Pennsylvania, and others. An interesting bunch.
