UPDATE August 26: We see that Randy Demmer has edited his poll on his home page to include agriculture. We're happy we saved the screen shots posted here and are even more pleased to know that Demmer's campaign finds time to read Bluestem Prairie [end update].
Earlier in the week, the Star Tribune reported:
"Farmfest has become an obligatory stop for politicians with important rural constituencies, as important in some ways as the State Fair. Politicking is common. Two of Sen. Norm Coleman's potential Democratic challengers were roaming the grounds, as was at least one of the four Republicans who hope to take on freshman Rep. Tim Walz."
We can't say who is was from the 4-pak that the Strib's reporter identified, but a young farmer of our acquaintance wrote to say that he had seen Rand Demmer wandering around the Gilfillan Estate grounds in Redwood County.
When he got back to the Internets, our correspondent visited Randy Demmer's congressional campaign web site eager to learn about the enterprising candidate's views on ag policy (as we've noted before at BSP, farmers love ag policy debates). He was taken back by the poll on Demmer's front page:
What issues do you think are important to the First District?National Security
Illegal Immigration
Education
Healthcare Cost
High Taxes
Government Spending
Environment
Transportation
Economic Development and Jobs
Noticeably absent from that list was "Agriculture."
Our farmer friend didn't resort to snark, since snark isn't central to agrarian discourse, but we noticed that Demmer touts "farmer" among his creds, and puts some mighty pretty photos of farm implements on that site. As our friend noticed, agriculture isn't among the important issues in the poll, nor is it in his agenda. Number one on Demmer's agenda is "Sometimes You Just Have to Say No." That's encouraging.
Screenshots taken today are provided in the thumbnails. To date, 37% of those taking the poll think "Illegal immigration" is the top issue in the District.
