This message was emailed yesterday to people on the Walz campaign email list and we've just gotten permssion to post it:
Dear Supporter,
Minnesota was struck by three disasters during the month of August. Tragedy struck in Minneapolis on August 1st when the I-35W bridge collapsed into the Mississippi river. Then, just three weeks later, flood waters wrecked havoc in southeastern Minnesota, resulting in the tragic loss of seven lives. The flood waters destroyed countless homes and businesses resulting in millions of dollars in damage to public and private property. These tragedies, combined with the disastrous droughts in rural Minnesota, present a significant challenge to Minnesota citizens, government agencies, and nonprofit disaster recovery organizations alike. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those impacted by these three disasters and those working tirelessly to assist in the recovery efforts.
Since the flooding began in southeast Minnesota, our office has received many inquiries from citizens who seek to help their neighbors in need. This desire to help does not come as a surprise because that's what we do as Minnesotans - we help our neighbors when they are in need!
Congressman Walz has spent the last two weeks in southeastern Minnesota and, now that recovery efforts are in full swing, he has asked us to distribute information on how each of us can chip in. Relief agencies like the United Way, Salvation Army and Red Cross are in place, ready and eager for help. To ensure a coordinated and effective volunteer response, the local United Way has established a website at www.uwolmsted.org. We hope you will consider taking some time in the coming weeks to volunteer in southeastern Minnesota.
Sincerely,
