The Post Bulletin has posted the congressmen's statements about last night's presidential address. Here's Walz's comments:
Rep. Tim Walz, Democrat from Mankato:
"President Bush is trying to convince Congress and the American people that routine troop movements are the result of real change in Iraq. This troop withdrawal has more to do with the fact that the Pentagon has acknowledged the need to scale back our forces due to the strain this 'surge' has had on our military. The president's own military and diplomatic leaders in Iraq acknowledge that the Iraqi government has made no political progress. When he was asked in his testimony before Congress whether the war in Iraq is making America safer, General Petraeus responded, 'I don't know.' The president must work with Congress to bring an end to American involvement in Iraq's religious civil war."
The article includes a statement byRep. John Kline (R-Mn-02) as well. Walz and Kline face off tonight on public television's Almanac. Click here for more information.
