The PB's Matt Russell reports in Train re-route should be considered, lawmaker says:
Whether Canadian Pacific Railway can route trains away from Mayo Clinic should be discussed, U.S. Rep. Jim Oberstar said today after meeting with Mayo, U.S. Rep. Tim Walz, and local officials.
Oberstar, chairman of the U.S. House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, made his comments at the Charter House in Rochester 10 days after CP announced plans to purchase Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern Railroad. . . .
. . ."In Minnesota, the Mayo Clinic should come first," Oberstar said today after what he called a "stunning" Mayo presentation about the possible impacts of increased rail traffic that he said would pass 800 feet away from the clinic's property. . . .
. . .CP has said it's made no decision about the proposed expansion into Wyoming and upgrade of tracks through southern Minnesota.
DM&E didn't offer immediate comment on Oberstar's statements.
