Local television crews covered yesterday's Iraq War Town Hall Meetings in North Mankato and Rochester. KEYC-TV's Max Jensen captures the flavor of the Nicollet County meeting. The video clip includes some of the audience members making their statements. The text:
. . ."I think it's critically important for citizens to have a say they're being listened too and its critical for me to be able to hear what's happening out there to make our constituents voices well heard.
Congressman Walz spent the first ten minutes laying the background to where we are at today in Iraq and Afghanistan then he opened it up to the public.
This was just one topic brought up today and Walz says he welcomes the concerns. "There's no RSVP, there's no screened questions, there's no one standing between me and them there's no wedging on the answers I'll give it to them." [Walz said].
One question raised today: the possibility of President Bush being impeached over the way he's led the war.T
hat was another topic Walz didn't dodge as the crowd clapped their approval. "I think in this public forum in front of your neighbors this kind of the time honored American tradition on public land talking about the issues facing us," [Walz said.]
And while not everyone in attendance agreed with the Congressman, he says it's a good opportunity for members of the district to voice their opinions and get some feedback from the man who's representing them. "It does matter they speak out," [Walz said.]
There's no video up at KAAL, but the station has posted a relatively long story for local television news in Congressman Tim Walz in Rochester to Discuss Iraq War. Its estimate of the attendence is larger than our (we counted about 75).
Thanks Ollie. A good read.
