Today's editorial in the Austin Daily Herald praises both of Minnesota's U.S. Senators and it Democratic members of Congress:
Minnesota’s elected officials in Washington are stepping up to fight a change in a Medicaid rule that would cut $45 million a year for state programs that help protect children in foster care and $38 million in programs for the elderly and mentally ill.
Senators Coleman and Klobuchar and the state’s Democratic congressmen are co-sponsoring bills in both houses that would effectively hold off on this change until it can be fully reviewed.
It’s nice to see our two senators working across the aisle to protect the health of children, especially with one of them up for re-election next year. That kind of anti-political move requires courage and firm beliefs on both sides.
We're curious why Sixth District Rep. Michele Bachmann didn't find herself on that list, given her grandstanding about her foster children.
The Post Bulletin has posted Rule would cut millions for 'vulnerable Medicaid beneficiaries', the AP article by Frederick Frommer that contains good background about the problem. Keith Ellison is the sponsor in the House, and Walz, along with the other three DFL representatives, are co-sponsors. If the change isn't made, the federal cut will most likely force spending onto county budgets.
