Earlier, DJ at IDHA wrote Walz fights for textbook cost awareness, mentions Stene’s work on House floor and we posted about Walz recalling Jared Stene's advocacy for students as well.
We just got a news release about his vote:
Today, Congressman Walz proudly voted for H.R. 4137, the College Opportunity and Affordability Act.
As a Mankato West geography teacher currently on leave to serve in Congress, Walz said, "This bill is a victory for middle-class families.
An educated workforce will ensure our nation's prosperity and will allow our children to compete in the global market. Investing in our children's education continues to be one of my top priorities. I believe this legislation shows Congress' optimism for the future."
The College Opportunity and Affordability Act builds on the advances made by the College Cost Reduction Act, which was signed into law in September of 2007. The College Cost Reduction Act increased Pell Grant awards and cut interest rates on subsidized student loans. "The College Opportunity and Affordability Act will reform our higher education system so that it operates in the best interests of students and families, while boosting our competitiveness and strengthening our future," said Walz.
Walz concluded, "I am especially pleased that this bill creates a new scholarship program for active duty military personnel and family members. It also funds the establishment of support centers to help veterans succeed in college and graduate. Finally, as a result of this legislation, it will easier for soldiers to go to college whilefulfilling their military service duties because fairness will be ensured in student aid and housing."
This landmark legislation would do the following things:
* Encourage colleges to rein in price increases and provide consumers with helpful information;
* Restore integrity and accountability to student loan programs;
* Simplify the federal student aid application process;
* Make textbook costs more manageable;
* Expand college access and support for low-income and minority students;
* Increase college aid and support for veterans and military families;
* Ensure equal college opportunities for students with disabilities;
* Boost campus safety and disaster readiness plans;
* Encourage colleges to adopt sustainable and energy-efficient practices;
* Strengthen our workforce and our competitiveness.
The bill passed 354 to 58. All members of Minnesota's congressional delegation votes for the measure, with the exception of Second District Republican John Kline and Sixth District Republican Michele Bachmann.
