While both of the First District Republicans sparring over their party's nomination grandstand about earmarks, Congressman Walz has been transparent about his budget requests, while supporting earmark reform.
Last week, he visited Owatonna to look at the neighborhood for which he's requested funding for a flood control project. The area was flooded twice last year.
The fairly conservative Owatonna People's Press is no fan of earmarks, but in today's editorial, the paper's board praises the project in An Earmark That Makes Sense, concluding:
. . .there are times when the projects are worthwhile. The earmark that Mr. Walz has proposed for Owatonna is one such case. What makes it important is that it is not a bridge to nowhere, but funds which will help a community prevent flooding and help residents keep their homes from being damaged. Keeping people and their property safe from the ravages of Mother Nature seems a worthwhile goal for the government.
