The MinnPost's Kathryn Pearson looks at competitive races in Minnesota. Her take on the First:
The GOP tilt of the First District, combined with the fact that incumbents are typically at their most vulnerable in their first reelection bids, mean that Walz is a target in this year. In fact, this race could have easily been a toss up, but Walz has used his membership on the Agriculture, Transportation and Veterans Affairs Committees to secure local federal funding and raise attention to issues voters in his district care about. He has also been helped by a competitive GOP primary in September between a party-endorsed newcomer, physician Brian Davis, and long-serving state Sen. Dick Day. If Walz shows signs of significant danger, the national party campaign committees will jump in, but for now, they are focusing on races like the Third.
We're not sure if the primary has much effect on the Walz campaign, but whatever.
Speaking of issues voters care about, the Minnesota Ag Connection notes in Klobuchar Highlights the New Farm Bill At Farmfest:
Klobuchar said she was pleased that Congress was able to secure passage this year of a new Farm Bill that is good for farmers, ranchers and families across Minnesota. Klobuchar noted that her office is holding a series of Farm Bill implementation meetings across the state this month with Representative Tim Walz.
"We want to work closely with farmers and rural communities on the new provisions and changes in this Farm Bill so Minnesota will get the maximum benefits," said Klobuchar. "I'm especially focused on the implementation of the permanent disaster relief, the country-of-origin labeling and the energy provision.
According to a Walz spokester, these implementation meetings will feature staff from both offices as well as representatives from various federal agencies. We'll post more information as we get it.
