A frequent correspondent in rural Blue Earth County writes:
If I didn't read your blog, I would never know there was an upcoming election. . .
Ok, seriously, what has surprised me is the lack of bumper stickers for the Presidential election. . . .
. . . Regarding Davis I have seen ... three ... an automobile bumper sticker months ago in Mankato ... a small tag appropriate for a shirt in St. Peter on a tree lawn ... and a placard at the Waseca County Fair's Republicans booth. The placard was off center from the 8x10 head shots of Bush and Cheney. It said to the effect "Drill now, Drill here ... Davis for Congress." But what struck me was the other sign next to Davis' ... an Elect Day for Senate .... I was taken aback until I noticed that next to Day's sign was one for Julie Rosen (Senator from District 24-Fairmont) ... the Party must have decided to acknowledge all the old stalwarts.
Both Day and Rosen represent parts of Waseca County, so the sign for the colorful Day wasn't banished from the booth. Still, as far as visibility goes, not a good thing for the Davis campaign.
The observer also notes the presence of two campaign yard signs at a house in Waseca when he traveled to the county fair earlier this summer--at former Congressman Penny's home. As the Waseca County News reported and we noted at the time in July, Penny's son is supporting Obama while his father is a McCain backer.
We think it speaks well of the elder Penny that he respects his children. No wonder he has continued to support MnSCU scholarships for young people interested in government and public service.
