Although the votes are still being counted, the AP and other sources have called it for Representative Wal in Minnesota's First congressional district. It's a victory for grassroots campaigning against outside secret money. Ruth Johnson's red boots (and those of others) on the ground versus saturation bombing in a pricey air war.
I'm here in the subdued victory party, where volunteers and supporters are waiting for Walz--and for Randy Demmer to concede.
The Mankato Free Press reports in Walz survives anti-incumbent wave in 1st District:
Democratic Rep. Tim Walz has beaten Republican Randy Demmer in a southern Minnesota race that had been targeted nationally as a potential GOP pickup.
Walz survives an anti-incumbent wave to win a third term in a swing district.
Demmer, a state legislator, tried to paint Walz as too liberal.
The national parties and other outside groups poured more than $1 million into the race, about two-thirds of it aimed at beating Walz.
Besides his party, Walz got support from moderate Republicans, veterans and the National Rifle Association.
From the looks of it, Mark Dayton will be Minnesota's next governor.
