The Mankato Free Press reports in Sex-crime suspect out on higher bail:
A Vernon Center sex assault suspect’s ability to post a larger bond for his release from jail is raising new questions about how he is able to qualify for a public defender.
Jeremy Allen Giefer, 37, posted a $350,000 bond for his release from jail Monday. The bond amount, issued by Griffin Bail Bonds, included $250,000 Giefer had previously posted before being arrested and jailed again for allegedly violating his release conditions.
Nick Pinto at the City Pages has more in Pawlenty Pardon: Sex offender Jeremy Giefer released on bail:
Under the terms of his release, Giefer has to wear a GPS monitoring device and isn't allowed to drink or own firearms. He also has to stay away from his three-year-old daughter by a former neighbor who has a restraining order against him, as well as any other girls under the age of 16, including his daughter and any witnesses.
That last requirement has so far proven difficult of Giefer. In addition to his previous bail violation, he was also recorded in jail arranging with a third party to contact his daughter.
Nevertheless, yesterday Giefer posted the extra $100,000 yesterday and was released.
Assistant Blue Earth County Attorney Chris Rovney has already questioned in court how a guy who can put up hundreds of thousands of dollars in bail is qualifying for a free public defender.
"I believe he has not been truthful," Rovney said of Giefer's financial claims after a December 13 hearing, adding that he intends to look into perjury charges over Giefer's application for a public defender.
Read more at the City Pages about how someone like Giefer can make bail. After reading what Pinto discovered, I now understand why the assistant county attorney asked for such high bail.
WHAT the HELL?!?!
How, how, HOW could this be happening?!?
If he'd been a poor black guy living in South Minneapolis, his chance for bail would have been revoked the second he tried contacting his victim-daughter. Who the hell is pulling strings for this guy? And how much more blatant can this get?
This guy's been coddled ever since he became a legal adult -- and I have a feeling he was coddled well before he became a legal adult, because that's the most likely reason I can find for his apparent belief (well justified by events) that he will be allowed to get away with damned near anything.
