A kind friend in Rochester sent me the rest of the Post Bulletin story, GOP hands Mower County an IOU. A couple of interesting items emerge from behind the paid firewall:
"I have a duty to the taxpayers of Minnesota who expended these funds," [Mower County auditor/treasurer Doug} Groh said. "We were abiding by their wishes and accommodating (the GOP). I shouldn't have to spend my time for four months" to collect payment."We just want to get paid for something we did. It's not like this is a partisan issue. I voted for Emmer."[emphasis added]
And the other county having trouble collecting? Post Bulletin staff writer Kay Fate reports:
Sharon Anderson, auditor/treasurer of Cass County, said the GOP owes Cass County nearly $1,800 and that the county's experience is similar to Mower County's. Some counties required a full or partial payment from both campaigns up front.
Why is a public servant and an Emmer voter being accused of "blackmail" by the chair of the Republican Party of Minnesota? As Groh explains it:
"Since December, I've had repeated conversations about when we'll get paid," said Doug Groh, auditor/treasurer of Mower County. "I had no problem with the Democrats paying, but the Republicans are fudging, because they're short of money — that's what I was told in December."
Since then, Groh said, he's been told the invoice was lost and, on three occasions, that the check was in the mail. Payment never arrived."We acted promptly, produced these documents they requested, added to our workload, and they don't want to pony up for the payment," Groh said....[emphasis in original online source].
Wow. Is Tony practicing his Scott Walker impression again? Talk about alienating a key group of backers - Mower County's not exactly a hotbed of socialism. Next thing you know he'll go Full Metal Walker and insult cops and firefighters.
