The Winona Daily News's Jerome Christensen reports on a group of Winonans who traveled to Madison to join the protests on Thursday.
In Winonans travel to Madison to support public employees, Christensen writes:
Like Joshua at Jericho they went round and round, drums beating, horns blaring, loud shouts echoing from the stonework. But the walls of the Wisconsin State Capitol didn't fall down and the doors opened but a virtual crack. . . .
. . .Twenty-five Winona area supporters joined the crowd, traveling to Madison on a bus chartered by the Winona Education Association. Dwayne Voegeli, trip organizer, said that teachers and union supporters were taking advantage of spring break ...
And thre's some humor amid the frustration:
Security was tight as State Troopers blocked all entrances to the Capitol building, admitting only a trickle of demonstrators, each of whom had to empty all pockets, be passed over with a metal-detecting wand and submit all bags and packages for a search. "I feel I should be getting onto an airplane," one demonstrator quipped as he stuffed wallet and change back into his pockets.
"Hey, we let you keep your shoes on and didn't take your toothpaste," the trooper shot back with a grin.
And:
On the other side of the building Randy Schmidt, Fredonia, Wis., and a lone companion held up signs in support of Walker and the Republican majority. . . Despite repeated challenges and a fellow standing next to him holding a sign reading "This is what underfunded education looks like" with an arrow in Schmidt's direction, Schmidt said he felt he was "among friends" and that the overwhelming majority of demonstrators defended his right to disagree.
