Bluestem isn't quite sure what it is about Minnesota's Republican Representatives and the Clown Killer, but to the best of its knowledge, former Representative Gil Gutknecht never confused serial killer John Wayne Gacy, of Waterloo, Iowa, with John Wayne, of Winterset, Iowa.
Michele Bachmann, who yesterday declared "Everything I needed to know, I learned in Iowa," experienced an oopsie moment today:
This morning, while in Iowa to announce her candidacy for president, Michele Bachmann made a play for local brownie points by comparing herself to one of the town's native sons, John Wayne.
But John Wayne was from Winterset, Iowa. And the John Wayne from Waterloo is actually killer clown John Wayne Gacy.
Oops?
Speaking on the front lawn of a quaint little home, Bachmann told a Fox News reporter, "John Wayne was from Waterloo, Iowa. That's the kind of spirit that I have, too."
Maybe it was the move to Anoka that launched her personal brain drain.
Bluestem would like to add a historical note: former Congressman Gil Gutknecht, a native of Cedar Falls, worked at the restaurant Gacy managed in Iowa. In 2006, the Mankato Free Press reported in Gutknecht calls for House page investigation:
Gutknecht — who worked as a teenager at a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant managed by John Wayne Gacy, who the world would later learn had molested and murdered dozens of boys . . .
“There was something about (Gacy) that was very different,” Gutknecht said. . . .
Give Gutknecht credit for not confusing him with the Duke. That honor belongs to Bachmann alone.

How zany do you have to be as a Republican for the Washington Times to call you on it?
