The latest Waseca County News looks at the House District 24B Cornish-Savick race in Cornish meets opposition in Savick. While they're not yet Pretend Internet Facebook friends, the two candidates seem to like each other.
Just not each other's ideas about anything.
In fact, it's unlikely Tony will friend Shannon, based on the deal-breaking horror that he sees on her Facebook page:
As for his possible opponent, former Wells mayor Shannon Savick, Cornish said he’s talked with her a few times at a coffee shop in Wells.
“Nothing bad but she’s pretty liberal from my conversations with her and she’s got [President] Obama on her Facebook page. So we differ quite a bit in politics because I’m very conservative,” said Cornish. “But I have nothing bad to say about her.”
So readers know what he's talking about when he says "she's got Obama on her Facebook page," Bluestem includes a screenshot, revealing links to Facebook pages for Barack Obama, Dr. Mehmet Oz, Sleepy Eye, Minnesota, Tim Walz. At the time Bluestem peeked at the Obama for America page, 22,857,384 people liked it, but Cornish apparently thinks it's odd for someone running as a Democrat to support other Democrats.
No word on what he feels about her undergraduate degrees in math and physics or her MBA and many years working in the computer industry.
To be fair, Cornish hasn't yet liked a Republican presidential candidate from the litter on Facebook, though he's fairly forthcoming about the horde of local Republicans he likes:
Minnesota Student Leadership Summit, Blue Earth County Republicans, Dave Kruse for Minnesota House, Center for Rural Policy and Development, Electric Beach, Rick Rice for House District 44B, Joe McDonald for State House, Dean Urdahl for Minnesota House of Representatives 18B, Busters Sports Bar & Grill, We Support Target, Best Buy, and Hubbard Brodcasting, Rich Stanek Hennepin County Sheriff, Rebecca Peichel for House, NO TANNING TAX, Kristi Noem, Tom Emmer, Tom Emmer for Governor, State Street Bistro, RazorCutz
No word if he still support Target after George Soros bought a chunk of the wholesale retail giant. But it's good to see he's as loyal in following Tom Emmer as our friends in Minneapolis. Bluestem is a bit concerned about Cornish's favorite novel, written by socialist author Jack London.
Savick shares Cornish's personal fondess, the paper notes:
Savick said she knows Cornish and has nothing personal against him. “He’s a personable guy; I just don’t like his politics.”
It's not just that. The County News also reports that Savick is a get-the-job-done sort of person:
After she and her husband moved to Wells five years ago, Savick joined a coffee group. One day they started talking about how terrible city government was.
“I opened my big mouth and said, ‘You’ve lived here all your lives and know everybody. You could elect anyone you want.’ They started staring at me,” said Savick. So she told her friends she would run for city council if they would campaign for her. She ran and she won. Savick was on the council for two years. When she joined, she said, city government was very closed and the mayor yelled at her every time she asked a question.
“I had broken a lot of glass ceilings and fought discrimination and that made me mad,” said Savick. “I fought for 20 years for equal opportunity and I didn’t like being treated like it was the 1950s again.”
Two years later, she ran for mayor, won and served a two-year term. She decided not to seek re-election because they had settled all the complaints she knew of, and it was “a good time to bow out.”
When she decided to run for the state legislature, her husband said, “There she goes again.”
Her motivation for seeking state office was the government shut down. ...
And while Savick is campaigning in the district, the County News reports Cornish is going to be hunting bear up north this week (hopefuly not looking for this she bear) and then on to hunting in Canada. Cornish said he felt his constituents needed relief from him:
“I’ll do what I always do, go to local events and parades but I’m going to give people a break.”
No word on what Canadians think about having him among them.

... and here I thought Cornish was curled up with Broke Back Mountain but he's been reading instead.
Do you think he'd like the Harry Potter series?
Editor's reply:
Since Cornish isn't shy, I'm sure he'd note if he liked the Potter books. Nor do I see Brokeback Mountain among his movie choices.

THANKS for posting this story .... funny, how Mr. Cornish states "I’m going to give people a break” because "They get real aggravated by phone calls and door knocking when you have both representatives and senators running" .... hmmm ... I live in Mr. Cornish's district and have NEVER received a telephone call from him or one of his supporters ... nor received any mailings from except immediately before Election Day ... nor have I seen him on the streets of Lake Crystal where he is employed as a member of the police department ... although people do tell me when he visits his favorite "watering" holes but since my "party days" are a long time ago, I guess we just don't frequent the same local spots.
Although Mr. Cornish is giving the voters a break, he apparently appears to be busy digging deep for "campaign research" ... is this standard police procedure to do "background checks" via Facebook ( although I do recall an incident earlier this year of someone being charged with using his Facebook page to threaten the deputy who cited him after a drug task force investigator checked his Facebook page. )
Is this the America that you want to live in where we elect candidates based on their "Facebook friends" and not the issues ?
And, why is it that Mr. Cornish is not promoting Minnesota tourism ... going to Canada ? ? ?
