Those following Emo Senator, Southern Minnesota's most loved telenovela, weren't surprised last Friday when Mike Parry, the drama queen of Waseca County, hopped into the race for Republican endorsement in Minnesota's First Congressional District.
It was a moment worthy of Mark Twain.
That narrative arc was further fleshed out Monday morning's Facebook announcement by Senate Republican Caucus Communications chief Michael Brodkorb (who wrestles under the name Spawn of Turd Blossom or STB as left boggers affectionately call him) that he was resigning as deputy chair of the Republican Party to volunteer to work for the Emo Senator.
Fortunately, the dark lord of Eagan will still draw his publicly-funded salary from the Minnesota Senate, so the opportunity costs of campaigning throughout the sprawling First should be covered.
And given the sycophantic nature of close personal relationships that STB developed with the more sedentary members of the Twin Cities media while "anonymously" blogging at Minnesota Democrats Exposed (and working as research director for the Republican Party of Minnesota), Emo Senator fans can anticipate much fawning coverage of Parry from outside of the rural district's media market now that Brodkorb has leapt into the race.
After all, Twitter makes it quite easy to avoid the drive to Houston or Luverne. Reporting the retweets of a horde of Republican employees posting from St, Paul as news from Southern Minnesota will make the entire process cost effective for editors' bottom lines. Gas is expensive, after all.
Given the mouthful of shot the Twin Cities tweeting media companions have swallowed, Emo Senator fans shouldn't anticipate anyone in the press pool to leap high in covering this race.
More shocking, but not surprising to those who have kept a close watch on Emo Senator, is Mike Parry's sudden silence in the face of Brodkorb's entrance on stage. The Albert Lea Tribune's coverage of Michael Brodkorb's bid for congress is typical of yesterday's news cycle:
. . .“I believe Sen. Parry can put the 1st Congressional District where it belongs — in the Republican-win column,” said former Minnesota GOP Deputy Chairman Michael Brodkorb. “I have worked closely with Sen. Parry since he was elected in a special election to the Minnesota Senate in January of ’10 and genuinely believe he is the right person to do this.”
Brodkorb on Monday announced he had resigned from his position with the state Republican Party to serve as a volunteer advisor to Parry.
Parry could not be reached for comment. . . .
Given the younger man's upstaging of the candidate, Emo Senator fans schooled in the grand Hollywood tradition are advised to getting the popcorn. It's all about Mike Brodkorb, though having a client named Mike should make the confusion easier to report.

Nice dress. Being "suddenly silent" is the most intelligent thing Mike Parry has said lately.
