Earlier this year, budding private security executive David Carlson launched a Kickstarter campaign for a reality television show, American PSD, but the campaign closed after it failed to reach its goal.
Now he's running for U.S. Senate, challenging Republican endorsee Kurt Bills. At today's Minnesotans for David Carlson Press Event, he'll share more of his ideas with the media.
Largely, it's an anti-Ron Paul reaction. While Carlson has taken down one statement about his candidacy, another on Facebook Why I'm running for the Republican nomination for United States Senate from Minnesota lays out his position as the Not-Bills:
After several weeks of careful consideration, extensive discussions with family and friends, and prayer, I have decided to seek the Republican Party of Minnesota Nomination for the United States Senate. Over the last several years, along with many of my fellow Americans, I have witnessed the failure of America’s politicians to move our nation forward. Lacking the courage to boldly confront and solve the major issues and challenges facing our state, and the nation as a whole.
Along with many conservatives, I watched as a very small fringe group of Libertarians infiltrated the Minnesota Republican caucus, uncompromisingly backing a slate of candidates who in large measure do not represent Minnesota values, and that’s evident by Congressman Ron Paul’s dismal 27% voter support in our statewide Presidential caucus. Many of these disciples chosen by their kingmaker, are widely viewed in our state, and nationally, as completely unelectable with negative views that do not reflect the heart of the Republican Party. In fact, I wholeheartedly believe that if we nominate Kurt Bills to represent the Republican Party, leading the state ballot, his radical affiliation with Ron Paul will crush any chances the Republican Party has of maintaining the Minnesota State House and State Senate.
It is my belief that we as a party must draw a line in the sand. Furthermore, that this senate seat, represents the principal battleground for the future of the Republican Party nationally. As a three tour Marine infantry combat veteran of the War in Iraq, and a father, I cannot sit idly and watch my party be destroyed. If no one challenges their ascendancy our party will be completely redefined, by the very few, most uncompromising, and divisive amongst our party.
Growing up on the East Side of Saint Paul, I came from a blue collar family, in a blue collar neighborhood. I attended public schools my whole life and graduated from the University of Minnesota. As a small business owner, combat Marine veteran—and most importantly, a Dad, I feel my diverse background gives Minnesota conservatives the best chance to win come November. We must nominate candidates who have broad appeal, across party lines, especially against a popular and well-funded incumbent.
I look forward to having several debates about the critical issues that Minnesotans are truly concerned about. In the end, I felt it was my duty to give Minnesotans who would prefer to not have to vote for either Amy Klobuchar or Kurt Bills, the best chance at our state having a Republican United States Senator come this November.
Carlson ran for House District 67B in 2008, in an unsuccessful campaign marked by fear-tactics. His campaign literature was admired in two posts by Minnesota Democrats Exposed blogger Michael Brodkorb, THE TOUGHEST MAIL PIECE I HAVE EVER SEEN and THE TOUGHEST MAIL PIECE I HAVE EVER SEEN #2.
In the first post, Brodkorb wrote:
A dedicated reader of Minnesota Democrats Exposed sent me a copy of a new mail piece by Dave Carlson against Representative Sheldon Johnson. Please click on the picture above for a larger version.
It looks like a man’s hand is covering the woman’s mouth. I may have nightmares tonight.

Among Carlson's 2008 contributors? "Bobby Thompson," the fraudster whose crimes where investigated by ace investigative journalist Karl Bremer at Dump Bachmann and Ripple in Stillwater. The award-winning series is accessible here:
The award was for Bremer’s lengthy investigative series on “Minnesota and the Man Known as Bobby Thompson” that was published on the DumpBachmann.com blog and RippleInStillwater.com. The series, which detailed the Minnesota operations of an allegedly fraudulent charitable veterans organizations run by “Thompson,” was largely ignored by the mainstream media.
However, the series so far has prompted a months-long investigation by the Minnesota Campaign Finance and Disclosure Board, which last week fined “Thompson” $21,000 for illegal campaign contributions to Minnesota Republicans and GOP-connected political committees. It’s not likely they will ever collect it, since “Thompson” is on the lam and wanted on nationwide warrants by several states for identity theft, fraud and other charges.
The 30 year-old Carlson (DOB 09/08/1981) is twice-divorced, and a glance at the state family and civil court records page suggests that enterprising reporters might find interesting reading in the case histories. In the criminal cases, files number 62-T8-00-041234 and 62-T3-06-616062 and 69-T2-02-605266 might also be worth examining.
And now, the Kickstarter pitch video for the reality show, where Carlson says viewers will learn, "We're real people who are dog-crazy":

Oh. My. God.
So he's in a business where he makes his money by scaring the crap out of white people.
Come to think of it, that's pretty much the GOP in a nutshell, isn't it?

How much more blatant can it get that hes all about fear. That 2008 campaign lit is just loathsome. I don't know what the "message is he referred to in the video, but I gather since it was for his business that it had something to do with stopping scary people from getting you if you're rich enough to buy their protection. Though he doesn't say in his Facebook post just what his problem is with Bills and libertarians, my guess is he objects to the isolationism and anti-war position of Ron Paul and many of his supporters. I'm not even sure hoe much libertarians will like Paul and Bills since they don't seem all that anti-war. The Paul followers seem separate from basic libertarians. Carlson seems all about the need to always be at war with somebody.
