State representative Andrew Falk (DFL-Murdock) has a newborn daughter--and a new challenger.
Arya was born November 24, the first child for Falk and his wife Marnie. She's a beautiful little girl.
But all isn't rosy for the young couple. Today, Gary Nelson filed as a Republican candidate in Falk's today.
A reliable source who is a former resident of Clara City identified the new candidate as the former basketball coach for the MACCRAY (Maynard-Clara City-Raymond) Wolverines who retired in 2012. Our source tells Bluestem that he was surprised to learn that Nelson is a Republican.
"Former math teacher and highly successful basketball coach. Has a wicked sense of humor. Fun guy," our source says.
Nelson's personal Facebook page isn't populated by the usual conservative "likes" either. Bluestem is trusting our sources that this is the right Nelson in the sea of Norwegians out here on the frozen prairie.
Falk, too, is deeply rooted in the West Central Minnesota district's' community. He farms with his father Jim at the highly regarded Falk Seed Farm. Now 30, Falk was first elected in 2008 and is serving his third term. One of the few farmers in the Minnesota legislature, Falk is vice-chair of the Environment, Natural Resources and Agriculture Finance Agriculture Policy committee.
