Representative Mary Franson (R-Alexandria) may have gained national attention by sharing a common conversative inbox tale that includes a comparison of feeding people on food stamps with feeding wild animals, but the woman who wishes to replace her as the 8B Republican nominee looks to be putting some skin into the offensive analogy game.
In her campaign press releases and on her website, Sue Nelson touts her conservative bon fides, including her family business, Tactical Defense Systems, which teaches classes required for carry permits and self defense. She's also deeply worried about the loss of values, according to the pull quote on her website's front page:
“I believe our rural Minnesota values are those that are the tried and true: of family, faith, freedom, hard work, supporting one another and being good stewards of God's land and God's people."
- Sue Nelson
Nelson expands on this thought in the "About" section of her campaign Facebook page:
As a lifelong conservative and proud Minnesotan, I am saddened to see the direction in which this state is headed. As a pro-life, pro-marriage, pro-second amendment Reagan Republican with an active volunteer background, I am unnerved by the erosion of our values.
I believe our rural Minnesota values are those that are the tried and true: of family, faith, freedom, hard work, supporting one another and being good stewards of God's land and God's people. My decision to run is one that I did not make lightly. I believe in our home and I admire our people.
We deserve to have our values represented in St. Paul.
Sue Nelson
Candidate for Minnesota State House (8B)
Isn't that nice? That's definitely going to be a real, respectful Christian lady heading to the state capitol, right--not someone the Republican Party will have to worry about doing damage control for, right? Right?
Bluestem hadn't checked out the material on the Nelsons' business's Facebook page, since it's a legal business and we hadn't anticipated anything noteworthy there.
We were wrong. As might be anticipated, the Nelsons' business is crossposting material from Mrs. Nelson's campaign Facebook page, with notes about how the district needs "District 8B deserves stronger, more secure leadership" after Franson one by just one vote (actually, the recount upped the official count to 12 votes).
Other than the inaccurate information, nothing wrong with that.
Values Like Calling the President "Subhuman"?
But if the Nelson campaign is hoping to brand itself as the voice of conservative rectitude and reserve, as opposed to Franson's gaffery, material posted on her family business's Facebook page suggests that dog won't hunt.
On January 28, using the caption "Ted Nugent: "Subhuman Mongrel" Obama Should be Jailed for Treason," an admin of Tactical Defense Systems uploaded a video of Nugent's buffoonery in a a Jan. 17 interview with Guns.com at the 2014 Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade Show, or SHOT Show, in Las Vegas. It's not mere sharing of a link, but an action that takes a bit more ownership of the material from Guns.com, along with a note to "Like and Share."
Only four fans liked it and only three shared it.
MSNBC notes that Nugent is known for his ridiculous flair in trashing the president, having:
made big headlines in 2012 when he said that he would either be “dead or in jail by this time next year” if Obama were re-elected. So far, neither prediction has come to fruition.
Media Matters points out in Outdoor Channel's Ted Nugent Says "Subhuman Mongrel" President Obama Should Be Convicted Of Treason:
National Rifle Association board member and Outdoor Channel spokesman Ted Nugent called President Obama a "subhuman mongrel" and argued that he and other liberal politicians should be punished for treason.
Merriam-Webster dictionary defines mongrel as "a dog with parents of different breeds." . . .
Nugent also made a sexist remark about Hillary Clinton, claiming, "Our politicians check their scrotum in at the door. Even Hillary, but obviously she has spare scrotums."
Just last week, Nugent compared a Jewish film producer to Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels and wrotethat African-Americans must "admit to the self-inflicted destructo-derby they are waging" in order to honestly celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, evidencing his long history of inflammatory commentary on race and other topics.
That's some evidence of stewardship for Nelson's firm to share this material, but she certainly has outflanked Franson with the human/animal metaphors.
Nelson not courting the hardcore Jesse vote?
The Facebook page also posted today about the anniversary of the death of "American Sniper," Chris Kyle, who was murdered by a troubled former Marine. Kyle--and now his widow--was being sued for defamation by former Governor Jesse Ventura. David Hanners of the Pioneer Press had more on the lawsuit on January 28 in Jesse Ventura: Was he punched? Will there be a trial? Judge to decide.
Ventura came in second behind Norm Coleman both Douglas and OtterTail Counties in the 1998 gubernatorial race. Does a residual Ventura factor remain in the area? Although the party match between Ventura and fellow Independence Party candidate Tom Horner migh not be a good one, IP candidate Horner took 12.79 percent of the vote in Douglas County in 2010 and 9.87 in Otter Tail County.
