The last Bluestem looked into the political universe of Beltrami County GOP chair and Tea Party organizer Ken Cobb, he was busy organizing the Draft Marty Seifert movement.
If a report by Zach Kayser in today's Bemidji Pioneer, DFL Rep. Persell has no challengers yet; GOP to pick Nolan challenger on Saturday, Cobb has had less luck encouraging candidates to run locally:
Beltrami County GOP chairman Ken Cobb said Thursday he hasn’t heard of any challengers coming forward against the House Majority Whip, who has served in the Legislature since 2008.
“I’ve been asked that a lot lately and unfortunately, no, I do not know of anybody at this point that’s made a decision to run,” he said. “I do think that Persell is beatable by a candidate willing to work hard, however, it’s not going to be something where a Republican puts their name on the ballot and gets elected just because they’re a Republican on the ballot.”
Percell's homespun progressive statements on the House floor and in committee have earned the water quality specialist and environmental policy analyst admiration. After he recently urged male colleagues to "put on their big boy pants" and vote to move the Women's Economic Security Act (WESA) out of committee, bill author Carly Melin said "I don't know how to follow that."
