The Uptake has pulled a clip of Representative Jim Newberger (R-Becker) from the ongoing debate in the anti-bullying bill, accompanying it with this description:
Representative Jim Newberger (R-Becker) first compares a proposed Minnesota anti-bullying law to George Orwell's 1984 police state, and then draws an analogy of standing up to Hitler.
A version of "Safe And Supportive Schools Act" passed in the Minnesota House last year, but did not in the Senate. A revamped version of the bill that drew more support from schools passed in the Senate this year and is now being debated in the House.
We also caught an Aldous Huxley reference, but perhaps we're reading too much in to Newberger's rambling floor speech in opposition to the bill.
