A mild-mannered but thoroughly respectable progressive, Senator John Marty (DFL-Roseviile) stood on the floor of the Minnesota Senate today to answer Senator Dan Hall's concerns about S.F. 2422 , which would authorize notaries to perform civil marriages.
Hall, a pastor and chaplain, seemed to be trying to make a sideways whack at the notion of non-ordained or unlicensed non-religious people marrying anyone.
Marty, the son of a well-known Lutheran theologian, Martin Marty, responded that a little Googling on Hall's part would have demonstrated the lack of seriousness of the ordination practices of many groups, including Dudeism and the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.
Yes, this really happened, as the video below shows; what's more, the Minnesota Senate later took up SF1641, the medical cannabis bill. Marty didn't go into the modern interfaith relationship between Dudeism and Pastafarianism, but we can't let the perfect be the enemy of the good on a day like this.
