Ken Martin ought be careful using the word "extremist" as a noun to describe Republicans running for office.

"Extreme" does not define an individual. "Extreme" is a measure of degree ascribed to various character traits, which may be positive or negative.

For example, I would think a person would rather be extremely intelligent than extremely ignorant. Most people would certainly rather be thought of as extremely virtuous than be viewed as extremely degenerate.

Thus, simply calling someone "extreme" doesn't tell us anything about the person targeted for insult, but it does tell us that the person hurling the accusation most assuredly is a soul of middling intelligence aspiring to moderate virtue.
