Mike O'Rourke reported in part:
Brainerd attorney has criticized House District 10A Republican candidate Josh Heintzeman for work his company, Up Country Log LLC, was compensated for while Heintzeman served on the 30 Lakes Watershed District board as a manager.
Attorney Ed Shaw, who has been active in the DFL Party, said in an email he thinks Heintzeman should return the $12,346 his company received; that an investigation was warranted; and said "it appears that a crime was committed."
Heintzeman said Monday there was no wrongdoing on his part and certainly not any criminal activity. The GOP candidate questioned the timing of Shaw's allegations, just days before the election.
"He is misinformed or is purposely misinforming," Heintzeman said. "Here we are eight days away from the election. Obviously, he has an agenda."
The payment was made and the bids were sought by the Pelican Lake Association, for work to be done on a Pelican Lake access. The lake association, according to Heintzeman, had grant money and their own money but sought additional financial help from the 30 Lakes Watershed District for the project.
. . .The attorney [Shaw], who does not serve in any official capacity with the Crow Wing County DFL Party, said he was acting as a private citizen and not as anyone's attorney. He said he learned of the situation about a week and a half ago and researched it before objecting publicly. Heintzeman termed the timing of Shaw's criticism as very suspect.
"All I can say is if I'd known about it last year I'd have raised it last year," Shaw said. . . .

So who leaned on the Dispatch? Or did its editor get cold chills at the thought of running a story that wasn't 100% deferential to Republicans?
