It's important to see gender in a recent sentence in Flanagan sworn in as newest member of Minnesota House, a Session Daily article:
Flanagan, 36, becomes the 45th woman — and second Native American woman — in the 134-member body.
Miss gender--and we get reports like this via Forum News Service, CAPITOL CHATTER: Second American Indian to take office:
Peggy Flanagan joins a rare segment of the Minnesota Legislature: an American Indian legislator.
The 35-year-old Democrat is a White Earth Nation member who lives St. Louis Park, a Minneapolis suburb. After a special election Tuesday, in which she had no opposition, Flanagan joins Rep. Susan Allen, D-Minneapolis, as the only two Native Americans in the Legislature. . . .
. . .The last northern Minnesota Native American to serve in the Legislature was Harold “Skip” Finn, who served in the 1900s.
Not so. As the screenshot for the Aabitoose, Onaabani-gilzis (Hard Crust Moon) 13, 2013 edition of Anishinaabeg Today reveals, there's a third native legislator serving in the Minnesota House: Fosston Republican Steve Green.
Flanagan is the second enrolled member of White Earth Nation now serving; as the Forum reports, Minneapolis DFLer Susan Allen is "has a South Dakota background, with her father from the Pine Ridge Reservation and her mother from the nearby Rosebud Sioux Tribe."
Bluestem noted Green's White Earth membership in Green amendment swipes Outdoor Heritage Fund proposal from White Earth Reservation.
We're more likely to agree with Flanagan politically, but ideology isn't a factor in determining membership of an American Indian nation.
