Anti-Muslim sentiment isn't the only fugliness afoot in St. Cloud, Minnesota.
Bluestem is saddened to read the lede of Alyson Zaczek's article in the St. Cloud Times, Swastika graffiti discovered at North Junior High School:
Anti-Semitic graffiti was discovered at North Junior High School on the morning of Sept. 29, according to Tami DeLand, director of community engagement and communications for St. Cloud Area School District 742.
Administrators discovered graffiti on the east side of the school building that included a swastika and the word "soon." The graffiti was covered before students arrived and was later removed, according to DeLand.
The swastika was discovered on Friday, Sept. 29, a date which also marked the beginning of Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the year in Judaism.
The article closes with a note that people in the central Minnesota regional center should know better:
St. Cloud schools teach about World War II and the Holocaust in seventh grade and again in greater depth in 10th grade, according to a statement from DeLand.
In addition, two years ago, district middle schoolers read "The Diary of Anne Frank" and attended a theatrical production based on the book at GREAT Theatre. They also visited a Holocaust exhibit at St. Cloud State University.
On the other hand, the German-American Bund enjoyed quite a heyday in the area during the 1920s and 1930s.
