Is the world of South Central Minnesota politics going to be turned upside down? There does seem to be something in the air this winter in addition to snowflakes and the sweet perfume of factory hog farms.
A special election in Minnesota House District 23B to replace former state representative and sexual harasser Tony Cornish. And there's the challenger to Hanska Republican Paul Torkelson, chair of the Minnesota House Transportation Finance Committee.
She's on the cover of Time Magazine, the New Ulm Journal's Clay Schuldt reports in New Ulm’s Kimmel on Time Magazine cover:
New Ulm’s Mindy Kimmel will appear on next week’s cover of Time Magazine, along with a collage of women running for public office this year.
The title of the magazine is “The Avengers,” and Kimmel’s face can be seen above the “H.” This issue of the magazine is highlighting women who participated in the Women’s March following the 2016 presidential election.
The magazine does not come out until Monday, Jan. 29, but the cover was posted Thursday on social media.
Kimmel was contacted a few weeks ago by a person from Time requesting a photo for a collage they were putting together for an upcoming magazine. Originally the plan was to put the collage in the Jan. 15 edition of the magazine, but The Avengers story was pushed back until Jan. 29.
“They said there was no guarantee they would use the picture,” Kimmel said. “When it wasn’t in Monday’s issue, I assumed they went a different direction.”
On Thursday morning Kimmel learned from a friend that Time put her on the cover. Kimmel said all day she received calls about her inclusion on the cover.
Kimmel said she is not the only Minnesota women on the cover. Recently elected Minneapolis City Council member Andrea Jenkins is on the bottom row of the collage. A congressional candidate for Minnesota’s 8th District, Leah Phifer, is located just below the “T” in the cover title. . . .
Kimmel is now seeking the DFL endorsement for Minnesota State House 16 B, which is currently held by Rep. Paul Torkelson (R-Hanska).
Kimmel is a licensed marriage and family therapist and teaches yoga classes in New Ulm.
The Journal reports that Kimmel will be helping MN23B endorsed DFL candidate Melissa Wagner this weekend:
This Saturday, Kimmel will help campaign for Melissa Wagner. Wagner is seeking the vacant Minnesota House District 23B seat in a special election scheduled for Feb. 12. The D-23B seat has been vacant since Nov. 30 when Rep. Tony Cornish resigned amid allegations of sexual misconduct.
Kimmel will continue her campaign for D-16B next week with a series of Common Ground meet-and-greet events to hear from voters. The first Common Ground meeting is scheduled for 8 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, at the Backerei in New Ulm.
