Ronald Reagan famously said in a 1986 press conference, "I think you all know that I've always felt the nine most terrifying words in the English language are, 'I'm from the government and I'm here to help."
While Bluestem doesn't agree, we were reminded recently that this nation doesn't produce conservatives with those great communication skills anymore when we read a news story in the New Ulm Journal. In Hagedorn visits students in the New Ulm Journal, we learned:
Nine Comfrey Public School fifth-graders stood and recited the Preamble to the U.S. Constitution for First District Rep. Jim Hagedorn Wednesday.
Hagedorn visited the class after receiving letters inviting him to visit them from Beth Griffis’ students about a month ago. . . .
“If you want to change the country and help people, joining Congress is a great way to do it,” Hagedorn said. “I want to change the country for the better. Politicians are just regular people who want to help folks.”
It's not an exact quote, but definitely the sort of claim President Reagan found scary. We're not sure how much the things Hagedorn said he's doing to help resonated with his audience in Comfrey:
“I sponsor and co-sponsor legislation like tax credits for biodiesel,” Hagedorn said. “I also work on reforming government to make it more efficient, help southern Minnesota people having problems with government programs like Social Security and Veterans benefits and selecting what applicants are appointed to U.S. military service academies.”
Well continue to keep an eye on Hagedorn's pilgrimages across the prairie.
