Update July 20, 2019: The event has been moved to the Montevideo American Legion. For details on Representative Miller's decision, visit our post Tim Miller moves fundraiser to the Montevideo American Legion because bullies urge boycott. [end update]
Via a Facebook post on state representative Tim Miller's personal page (graphic here on his campaign page), we learned that fellow New House Republican Caucus member Steve Drazkowski will highlight an August 1 fundraiser for Citizens for Tim Miller, the Prinsburg New Republican's campaign committee.
Drazkowski will present "The Case Against Congresswoman Ilhan Omar" to the gathering throng at the Chippewa County winery. Presumably, the case Draz was originally scheduled to discuss was related to the copy in WCCO's State Representative Steve Drazkowski Calls For Ilhan Omar Investigation.
Or will The Draz supplement his material with the "breaking news" about the Fifth district congresswoman, as per the New House Republican Caucus Facebook page:
That's one heck of a teaser for Republicans in Collin Peterson's Seventh Congressional District about the guest, who's becoming something of a rock star on the conservative news circuit. Miller tried to challenge Peterson, but ended his 2017-2018 cycle bid in December 2017 when he discovered congressional-scale fundraising was hard. Findings published at the Minnesota Campaign Board illustrate just how difficult that process was.
Miller gushes his gratitude to Drazkowski in the Facebook post:
Join us! This is a wonderful annual event. Steve was a major factor in me being in office today. He is a good friend and a great man!
Indeed. Not only did Draz campaign on the ground for Miller in his second run in 2014, the Mazeppa Republican paid field worker Joe Meyer $2452 to pitch for the Renville County RPM (page 8), as well as $4500 in cash to the Renville County, (page 12), for a total of $6952.
While active candidates can't give money directly to another candidate, it's perfectly legal to send money and help to the local party unit. According to the party unit's 2014 Year-End Report, the Renville County RPM in its turn gave Tim Miller $5610, $4110 (page 7) of which was doled out after the Draz cut the county committee the $4500 check on September 20, 2014 (page 4).
The contributions to Miller were the most generous of any contribution to a candidate on the part of the county party unit. Republican statewide candidates Randy Gilbert (auditor); Scott Newman (attorney general) and Dan Severson (secretary of state) all received a mere $500 each on June 16, 2014 (page 7).
We look forward to reading what Miller rakes in on August 1, though we'll have to wait until early 2020, since House candidate committees are required to file only year-end reports during non-election years (view all of Miller's reports here).
Miller's district is largely rural, but the other half of the senate district includes Willmar, home for many Somali-Americans. In May, New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman invited President Trump to visit the regional center. City Pages looked at the column in New York Times celebrates Willmar as a model for rural America's future.
Somehow, we're betting infrequent twitter user Miller won't be standing with Omar anytime soon.
