We're guessing the person at the Perham Focus who slapped the headline Otter Tail schools get $30 million in safety funding might not have been paying close attention to the copy in a press release send out by Fergus Falls Republican Bud Nornes on Wednesday.
Most constituents want lawmakers to bring home the bacon, but $30 million in safety funding for one county's schools is a bit over the top.
The copy in the rewrite correctly highlights information buried in the last paragraph of the original press release:
The money comes from a one-time Safe Schools Supplemental Aid appropriation in the state’s new education budget. The $30 million will be provided to school districts and charter schools on a per-pupil basis. All school districts encompassing Nornes’ District 8A will receive funding, including Fergus Falls ($100,483), Perham-Dent ($50,933) and Pelican Rapids ($30,110).
Most of that got moved to the two lede paragraphs at the Focus:
School districts throughout Minnesota are receiving a combined $30 million from the state to fund safety initiatives, according to a news release from state Rep. Bud Nornes, R-Fergus Falls.
In Otter Tail County the Perham-Dent ($50,933), Pelican Rapids ($30,110) and Fergus Falls ($100,483) school districts, among others, will be receiving funds.
Will readers see the headline and wonder where in Otter Tail County the rest of the $30 million is stashed?
Screenshot: Otter Tail County scores big-time in this headline. We're not sure how many millions would make DARE and gang resistance programs work in any county in Minnesota, but the headline writer might be on to something.
