How soon the tables have been turned on Jeremy Munson, the endorsed Republican candidate in Minnesota House District 23B.
The MN Jobs Coalition Legislative Fund, a political fund registered with the Minnesota Campaign Finance and Public Disclosure board, spent $82,308.24 in television ads and mailing lists against his DFL opponent (and $650.25 on a phone bank for him) in the February special election to fill the open seat created by the resignation of Tony Cornish. (See the group's 2018 Year-End report here).
Now the group has sent out a postcard against his bid in next Tuesday's Republican primary in the south central Minnesota district. This despite the comparatively lackluster fundraising listed online in the Campaign Finance Board's Financial Summary for the fund. The once high-rolling fund ended the pre-primary with less than $10,000 cash on hand.
And now some of that coin is being spent against an endorsed Republican House candidate. As we reported in MN23B Reindeer games: Republican challenger to Jeremy Munson has quite the resume, the Lake Crystal New Republican faces Yvonne Simon for the Republican nomination. Without opposition, Munson was endorsed by local Republicans; Simon filed her challenge at the last minute.
On his personal Facebook page, Munson posted:
The post shares a longer Facebook entry (screengrab at the top of this article) from his Representative Jeremy Munson Facebook page:
The negative mailers based on bald-faced lies have started. When challenged to a primary, my family and
I knew attacks from outside groups were coming, so I asked everyone to pay attention to the “prepared and paid for” statements on negative campaign mailers and ads. Today, the Jobs Coalition Legislative Fund sent a negative mailer chock full of lies. It is illegal in MN to outright lie on campaign literature, but lobbying groups like this one do not mind paying the $5000 fine, if their lies influence elections.
These attacks are not only meant to smear me, but also send all legislators a message about staying in line and keeping quiet. I will not be intimidated. I did not run to be a career politician, so these types of threats do not work on me. Make no mistake, I will not back down. I will continue to be transparent, and call out conflicts of interest and back room deals. I will again introduce legislation making it illegal for a legislator to also work for a lobbying firm. And I absolutely will not stop fighting to lower the cost of healthcare in MN. My Right to Shop bill is a fantastic piece of legislation and I will continue to push for it. Similar legislation has already helped to lower healthcare costs in four other states.
Here is the truth:
1) Along with all my Republican collegues in the House, I voted, 'NO' on defunding police.
2) This year alone, I had FIVE HEARINGS on bills I chief authored, one passed the house, and I co-authored over 100 bills with other Republicans.
3) I earned awards from CPAC, the LEA, Action for Liberty, and the MN Taxpayers League for my fiscal conservative voting record.
4) I work with Republican legislators in both the House and the Senate. In fact, 22 House Republicans signed on as co-authors to support my 'Patient Right to Shop' bill this year.
5) I was unanimously endorsed by the Republican Party.
I am asking for your support and vote on Aug. 11th. Every vote is extremely important in a primary election.
I am running on principles, transparency and my conservative voting record. I will not run a negative campaign. If you have questions about these attacks, please call me at ...
We're hoping to get an image of the entire independent expenditure mailer.
Munson is correct about the sponsors of HF638, the Patient Right to Shop bill.
However, we were unable to find the non-profit parent group of the political fund, the MN Jobs Coalition, in the Board's database of lobbying associations.
We've contacted the MN Jobs Coalition, as well as Representative Munson, to obtain a copy of the entire IE mail piece so that readers can compare the material. The post will be updated to reflect the added material should it arrive.
