We've been off the page for the last couple of days, frantically searching for canning jar lids. Like many rural Americans, we grow and can our own vegetables--a lingering heritage of those Victory Gardens that helped the home front win WWII seventy-five years ago.
As a caution against food insecurity--and something useful to be done at home--many other Americans joined in growing their own gardens, and the interest and possibly supply chain problems have made canning jar lids scarce. Unlike the jars and bands, most types of lids can't be re-used.
An appeal to the webs brought us news of lids at area hardware and grocery stores, and these two packages from friends. We were reminded of how much rural America depends on the postal service and a neighborly spirit.
We'll have more about the news about Trump and the United State Postal Service; for the moment, we're grateful to friends who helped us score those lids, as well as tired from picking all that wonderful homegrown food.
Screengrab: Our tweet of gratitude.
