In Decision on charges in S.D. Attorney General Ravnsborg's accident may come before Christmas, Jonathan Ellis reports for the Argus Leader:
The South Dakota Highway Patrol’s accident report says Boever was walking with a light on the shoulder of Highway 14 at the time of the accident. It does not say what type of light or whether it was on. The report says that Ravnsborg drifted onto the shoulder where his vehicle struck Boever. It also says that Ravnsborg was distracted at the time of the accident, but the report does not identify the distraction, and authorities have declined to say.
Earlier in the copy, there's this:
Ravnsborg, 44, was returning to Pierre on the night of Sept. 12 following a Republican fundraising dinner in Redfield when he struck and killed Joseph Boever. The 55-year-old Boever was walking on Highway 14 just west of Highmore near where his pickup truck had gone off the highway earlier that day.
That's pretty sloppy copy, given that Boever was not walking on the highway. He was on the shoulder.
Indeed, the distracted Ravnsborg wasn't on the highway either, but on the shoulder on which his vehicle had drifted.
The lede:
A team of prosecutors reviewing the evidence in the fatal car accident involving Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg hope to have the investigation completed by Christmas.
We suspect there will be a Christmas present here, but it won't be justice for Joseph Boever.
