I've written before about my maternal uncle John D. Osborne, an Army staff sergeant who was killed by German S.S. Panzer troops as a prisoner of war at Malmedy during the Battle of the Bulge. He was born and raised in Watonwan County, but he's buried in the national cemetery at Ft. Snelling.
While many Americans thank all of those who have served this country on Memorial Day, I'm pretty old school and on this day commemorate those men and women who gave their lives in military service.
