Bluestem has been following a story first broken on May 5 by Cory Allen Heidelberger at Dakota Free Press, Manhart Voted in Wisconsin in 2021, Thus Ineligible to Run for South Dakota House in 2022.
UPDATE #2: Check out our new post, News digest: Manhart pulls out of SD1 race. [end update]
UPDATE: Reached by phone for comment, Democratic candidate Steve McCleerey, who filed 32CIV22-92; McCleerey vs Barnett told us:
Logan Manhart did the right thing. There's been negative publicity about the race and his decision will help restore public trust in South Dakota's elections. I also want to thank everyone who supported my efforts to preserve the integrity of our elections.
Baring any additional twists and turns--a replacement Republican since Manhart withdrew after the primary--Manhart's withdrawal from the race means that this district will continue to be served by at least one Democrat. Currently, Democratic candidate Jennifer Keintz and remaining Republican candidate Tamara St. John serve in the South Dakota House. McCleerey, a former Democratic legislator, is on the ballot as well. In most South Dakota districts, voters select two House members and one Senator. [end update]
This morning, Manhart posted the image on a post pinned on his campaign Facebook page.
In his headnote, Manhart writes:
As many are aware, questions have been raised regarding my eligibility to run for this position.
After seeking legal council and speaking with my friends and family, I have decided it is best I withdraw from my race in District 1.I encourage you to read and share my statement below
His tweet is the same message.
We'll update this post as the story develops.
