We continue to watch the Minnesota Senate District race with interest, what with Nathan Miller's write-in campaign, amid accusations that the Republican "establishment" and Jordan Rasmusson himself tampered with delegate lists to the endorsing convention.
The image at the top of this post is a paid ad in the Pelican Rapids Press by the Miller for 9B campaign, viewable in the Pelican Rapids Press at Nathan Miller Announces Write-in Campain [sic] for State Senate District 9 makes just that point.
Miller isn't the only one suggesting Rasmusson has stretched thing a bit in his drive to step up from one term in the state house to the senate, though the DFL candidate is stressing votes and policy, not internal party process.
In a letter to the Pelican Rapids Press, DFL senate candidate Cornel Walker points out the problem in Candidate Walker points to Rasmusson votes as shortcomings in legislative term:
I am running for State Senate in SD 9, which encompasses all of Otter Tail County, 11 western townships of Douglas County, and all of Traverse, Wilkin, and Grant Counties.
In a Voter’s Guide published Sep 27, 2022, in the E-Edition of the Fergus Falls Journal, my opponent, Jordan Rasmusson, made the following statement, “As stated in both the Wheaton Gazette and the Pelican Rapids Press, “even his political opponents admit that Jordan Rasmusson had a successful first term in the Minnesota House….”
This could not be more wrong.
With all due respect, I have never and would never say that Jordan Rasmusson had a successful first term as a Representative.
In fact, I have publicly expressed my shock and disappointment at his vote against the Drought Relief Bill, which would have helped our farmers. There is also my vocal opposition to his expression of satisfaction that $4 Billion of the surplus was not spent on our citizens when it was and is desperately needed.
Republicans and DFL candidates are not enemies, but we should make sure that what we say about one another’s comments accurately reflects the truth.
Thank you for allowing me to clarify my position.
Cornell Walker, DFL
Candidate for State Senate District 9
Walker certainly has a point.
Another writer makes it clear that not all agree with Miller and Walker.
In another letter in the same issue, ‘Third party disruption’ is impacting State Senate election in the region, Tommy Merickel concludes that in the end, the election isn't about fair process or policy and votes, but the retention of power:
. . . I urge the voters of Otter Tail County to make their Republican and Conservative vote count and carefully consider how a vote for a 3rd Party Write-In candidate will only hurt the Republican’s chance to retain the majority in the Minnesota State Senate. We need to send leaders to St. Paul. I encourage you to vote for Jordan Rasmusson SD 9 and Jeff Backer HD 9A.
People or party? Need it be that pure? On Facebook October 3, Torrey Westrom's mother, a Miller supporter, had an interesting exchange with a commenter who accused "FB" (Facebook) of posting a pro-Miller graphic. Rosanne Westrom responded that she had posted the image, that shenanigans happened and that Rasmusson is a "former dem," and liberals are playing games to create a doubt. The comments have since been removed:
Only the voters will decide.
