Back in February, Bluestem Prairie noted Matt Grossell cited for DWI. Apparently diversion program for 2019 disorderly night wore off and Matt Grossell DWI update: implied consent hearing petition filed & more from MCRO.
The latest alcohol-involved episode comes after Grossell avoided conviction on a drunken episode in in 2019. Readers may remember that in early May 2019, Bluestem posted In more sober moments than Saturday morning, lawmaker has more respect for hospital staff:
By now, news of the early Saturday morning arrest of Clearwater Republican state representative and retired deputy sheriff Matt Grossell for trespassing has been tweeted mercilessly since Deanna Weiniger and Dave Orrick scooped the story for the Pioneer Press.
It was a sad episode for the Republican lawmaker, though as Forum News Service's Sarah Horner reported in June 27, Northern Minnesota lawmaker can avoid conviction through diversion program:
. . . Diversion was the ideal outcome for Grossell, his attorney said.
“Rep. Grossell is pleased that all charges will be completely dismissed in five months and he looks forward to doing public service in his community,” Garry wrote in an email.
Hotel security called St. Paul police about 1 a.m. this past May to the Best Western Plus Capitol Ridge, which is near the state Capitol, after a report of an intoxicated man acting disorderly in the bar.
Sadly, Grossell has not lived up to that diversion's redemption and expungement from his record.
We left the most recent drama at Update: Rep. Matt Grossell arraigned for DWI in April.
It appears that Grossell's most recent case is close to being settled. Perhaps he'll go back to snipe hunting for mysterious antifa buses near his district.
At Lakeland PBS, Mary Balstad reports on Independence Day in State Rep. Matt Grossell Enters Guilty Plea to DWI Charge:
Minnesota Republican Rep. Matthew Grossell of House District 2A has entered a guilty plea in relation to a drunk driving case.
According to court documents, Grossell entered a guilty plea in Clearwater County on one count of 4th Degree DWI – Operating a Motor Vehicle Under the Influence of Alcohol. Grossell is also charged with one count of DWI with Alcohol Consumption of .08 Within 2 Hours and one count of 4th Degree DWI.
Law enforcement cited Grossell earlier this year on February 11 for drinking and driving. The Minnesota State Patrol report stated Grossell was stopped around 1 a.m. east of Gonvick for driving 71 mph in a 55 mph zone.
During the February incident, Grossell reportedly showed signs of alcohol impairment. Tests showed Grossell had a B.A.C. of .15%. Grossell was placed under arrest but was not booked due to the county jail being closed.
The maximum possible sentence for the misdemeanor is 90 days in prison and a fine up to $1,000. A pre-trial for Grossell is set for July 24 at 2:30 p.m.
Here's the petition to enter a guilty plea, from court records:
