At Outdoor News, Brian Mozey reports in CWD-positive test results jump from three to 20 in Minnesota:
The Minnesota DNR released new sampling test results on Wednesday, Nov. 22, for chronic wasting disease in white-tailed deer. The number of confirmed 2023 CWD-positive samples jumped from three to 20 in one day.
Out of the 20 confirmed CWD-positive samples, 15 of them were found in the state’s southeast where there are eight CWD management zones. The region contains most of Minnesota’s CWD-positive cases in wild deer.
The breakdown in each deer permit area includes eight in 648, one in 646, four in 647, one in 645, and one in 649. The others include three in 605, one in 679, and one in 661.
There also are currently 13 samples named as “suspect,” according to the DNR website on Nov. 22. A suspect sample is going through a second round of testing to confirm if CWD is found in the sample or not.
The number of CWD positive samples could potentially grow with 13 suspect samples and 1,342 samples pending test results. Out of the 11,534 samples, 10,459 samples have been found negative for CWD.
Since 2010, Minnesota has found 236 cases of CWD in wild deer, including the 20 positives today.
