Another chapter in the ongoing saga of fish kills and water pollution in Southeastern Minnesota's karst region was reported by John Weiss for the Rochester Post Bulletin in 4 state agencies recommend actions to prevent SE Minn. fish kills.
As Weiss and the report embedded below note, the report was ordered by the state legislature in the 2023 session.
Weiss reports:
A state report released this week about how to prevent fish kills in Southeast Minnesota says the state would need to spend $50 million in the region to help feedlot owners build better manure systems so it can later be spread on fields at the proper time.
It also offers several suggestions from four state agencies about what they can do to help.
“Preventing fish kills in Minnesota’s driftless region” was written by the state’s Pollution Control Agency and departments of agriculture, health and natural resources. It is a report to the 2024 Minnesota Legislature and includes strategies to prevent future kills. The past legislature mandated the report by Monday, Jan. 15, 2024.
Trout anglers, conservationists and others called for more to be done after four kills of fish, mainly trout, within about 15 miles of Lewiston in the past several years. The most recent was in August 2022, in Rush Creek south of Lewiston and that prompted an outcry. . . .
Weiss unpacks the report in the article. Here's the report itself:
