Last October, Bluestem Prairie posted MN07 Republican challenger Steve Boyd doesn't think of himself as extreme. Why would anyone? in response to the banal treatment of the Christian Nationalist primary challenger to incumbent congresswoman Michelle Fischbach.
On the day after Christmas, I posted Odd choice given Fischbach's January 6 choices: MN07 primary challenger Steve Boyd hosting Epoch Times "real" January 6 film and town hall, exploring Boyd's presentation of pro-January 6 insurrectionists and a movie about the "real" January 6 events.
Now the Star Tribune has made Boyd the lede in Three years later, some Minnesota Republicans show sympathy toward Jan. 6 rioters. Ryan Faircloth and Reid Forgave report:
FERGUS FALLS, Minn. – At a VFW in this western Minnesota city, about 150 people showed up on the third anniversary of the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol to watch a documentary that blames much of the violence that day on escalation by law enforcement.
Among those in attendance: three Minnesotans who've been federally charged in the riot and two GOP state representatives. Steve Boyd, a Republican running for Congress in Minnesota's Seventh District, introduced the film.
"It's quite the story," Boyd said. . . .
As the online "flyer" for the January 6 event above illustrates, Boyd did more than just introduce the film. His campaign sponsored the evening. Note the disclaimer at the bottom of the image.
And he promoted the event on his campaign Facebook page. A screenshot:
The Strib isn't the first media venue to be confused about Boyd's relationship to the event his campaign sponsored. As Bluestem noted in the December 30 post, Alexandria Echo Press picks up on MN07 candidate Steve Boyd's January 6 event:
Now the Alexandria Echo Press's Karen Tolkkinen has picked up on the story with a bit of comments from Boyd. In Kensington congressional candidate sides with January 6 defendants Tolkkinen reports:
Steve Boyd, the congressional hopeful from Kensington, is holding a Jan. 6 public forum in Fergus Falls featuring several defendants in the Jan. 6 insurrection. . . .
The flyer does not appear on Boyd's campaign website or his social media accounts on X (formerly Twitter) or Facebook. It was posted on X by Max Hailperin, who described himself as a "retired computer scientist and dabbler in election geekery." Contacted by the Echo Press, Boyd said the Jan. 6 events are open to the public, including news reporters, that he had been verifying details with the venue, and that he would post the event more publicly. . . .
The copy in the article online at the paper now reads:
The flyer does not appear on Boyd's campaign website or his social media accounts on X (formerly Twitter) or Facebook. It did appear on Dec. 23 on his Facebook campaign page and was later posted on X by Max Hailperin, who described himself as a "retired computer scientist and dabbler in election geekery." . . .
There's a clarification on the bottom of the article now: "This story has been clarified to explain that while the Jan. 6 flyer was not posted on Boyd's personal Facebook page, it was posted on his campaign Facebook page on Dec. 23.
Is Boyd making progress in his primary bid? So far. Fischbach maintains a formidable lead in fundraising, though Boyd is sponsoring campaign events across the district.
Bluestem will continue to keep an eye on the race.
